The settled end of the New Zealand summer. The air over the Alps is at its calmest, which is what decides whether a small aircraft flies; the days are still long; and the fiord is green from the summer rain without being buried in cloud. Availability is easy a week or two out.

Snow still on the tops, waterfalls full from the spring melt and the walls at their most saturated green. The crowds arrive around the middle of December, so the earlier half of this window is the better one.
May – Aug
Winter gives the sharpest air of the year and the emptiest boats. The trade is short daylight, short weather windows and more rescheduling. Excellent if you have flexibility; frustrating if you do not.

Everything runs and everything is full. Book weeks ahead, take an early departure, and expect company on the boat.
Why rain is not the problem people expect
Rain makes the waterfalls. Cloud stops the aircraft.
Milford Sound gets somewhere around six metres of rain a year. That is not a footnote; it is the whole landscape. The rainforest growing on near-vertical rock is there because of it, and so is the layer of fresh water that sits on top of the salt water in the fiord.
What rain does to the cruise. It improves it. Within an hour of heavy rain the walls run with hundreds of temporary waterfalls that are not there in dry weather. Regular visitors book hoping for rain.
What rain does to the flight. That is the real question. Rain itself is not the obstacle; cloud is. An aircraft needs to see the pass it is crossing and the strip it is landing on. A wet day with a high ceiling flies; a dry day with the fiord socked in does not.
