The hours. Milford Sound is 288 km from Queenstown by road and the road cannot go straight. Twelve to thirteen hours return, of which about eight are spent sitting in a vehicle. A flight and cruise is four to five hours. That is most of a day of a short holiday, and it is the real product.
The Southern Alps. Between Queenstown and the fiord lie glaciers, hanging valleys and snowfields with no road to them. The coach tunnels under all of it through the Homer Tunnel. Only an aircraft crosses it.
Seeing the fiord twice. From above it reads as a trench; from the water it reads as walls. They are genuinely different experiences of the same place, and the combination is the only product that gives you both on one day.
Notice what is not on that list: the cruise. Everybody gets the same cruise. It is not the reason to pay more.
