Road or air
Milford Sound is 288 km from Queenstown by road, and the road cannot go straight. It runs south to Te Anau, north up the Eglinton Valley and then under the mountains through the Homer Tunnel. The coach day is twelve to thirteen hours. A Milford Sound flight and cruise covers the same fiord in four and a half, and crosses the Alps the road tunnels under.

Quick answer
The coach day from Queenstown is twelve to thirteen hours and about eight of them are spent sitting; a Milford Sound flight and cruise is four to five hours. The road gives you the Eglinton Valley, the Mirror Lakes and the Homer Tunnel at ground level for roughly a third of the price. The flight gives you the Southern Alps, which the road never sees, and your afternoon back. Both end with the same two hours on the water.

What the road gives you that the air cannot
The valley, the tunnel, the walks and the price.
The Eglinton Valley. Flat, golden and framed by beech forest, with the Mirror Lakes at the northern end. It is one of the best stretches of road in New Zealand and you see none of it from 3,000 metres.
The Homer Tunnel. 1.2 km bored straight through the Darran Mountains, with an alpine bowl at the eastern portal where keas walk around the cars. A flight goes over the top of all of it.
The Chasm and the short walks. Ground-level places, none of which an aircraft can deliver.
The price. The coach day costs roughly a third of the cheapest combination, and for a lot of people that settles it.
What the air gives you that the road cannot
Glaciers, the shape of the trench, and your afternoon back.
The Southern Alps from above. Between Queenstown and Milford lie glaciers, hanging valleys, snowfields and alpine lakes with no road to them at all. The coach tunnels beneath that; the aircraft crosses the top of it. This is the half of the day the road cannot sell you at any price.
The shape of the fiord. From the water you see walls. From the air you see that Milford Sound is a fifteen-kilometre trench cut by ice, running out to the Tasman Sea, with more of the same on either side.
Eight hours. A Milford Sound flight and cruise costs you a morning. The coach day costs you the day and most of the evening.

If you only have one day
Four questions, in this order.
Twelve to thirteen hours is a whole day and then some. Four and a half is a morning.
Then fly. The road goes under them, not over them.
Then drive, or take a coach tour. No aircraft can deliver a roadside stop.
The coach day is roughly a third of the cheapest flight-and-cruise. That is a real difference and it is a fair reason to choose it.
When to do which
The road is open almost all year; the flight is the one the weather argues with.
Feb – Apr
Settled air over the Alps, long days, and the road at its least crowded. The window we would pick for either.
Nov & Dec
Snow on the tops, waterfalls full from the melt, and the road quieter than in January.
May – Aug
Winter closes the Homer Tunnel road from time to time and shortens the flying windows. The air is crisper than at any other time of year when it does fly.
Jan
Everything runs and everything is full. Book weeks ahead whichever way you go.
Common questions
288 km by road each way, and the road cannot go straight — it runs through Te Anau and the Homer Tunnel.
Twelve to thirteen hours from Queenstown, according to the operators’ own listings.
About forty minutes each way. The whole combination, cruise included, is four to five hours.
Yes — two listings here do exactly that, from $512. They take about nine hours.
If eight hours of your holiday are worth more than the difference, yes. If they are not, the coach day is a good day.
Barely. It is about two hours on the same fiord whichever way you arrived.
The same fiord, two different days
Twelve hours on the road, or four in the air and on the water.
By road. Twelve to thirteen hours, 288 km each way, and a long list of stops that only exist at ground level. Cost: roughly a third of the cheapest combination. What you get is the Eglinton Valley, the Mirror Lakes, the Homer Tunnel and the Chasm.
By air. Four to five hours and your afternoon back. Cost from $431. What you get is the Southern Alps, which the road tunnels underneath, and the shape of the fiord from above.
The reason we keep the coach prices on this page at all is that a Milford Sound flight and cruise and a coach day are not competitors in the way the fares suggest. They are the quick version and the slow version of the same destination, and people who have time and not money should take the slow one without embarrassment.
If you are driving it yourself
The guided coach tours exist largely because of this list.
And the last hundred are slow. Four hours of driving without stopping is optimistic.
There is very little between Te Anau and the fiord, and nothing at all for long stretches.
Traffic lights at each end in summer, and waits of several minutes.
The road over the pass requires them at times between May and October.
Twelve to thirteen hours is the round trip, and the second half is driven tired. This is the single most common reason people switch to a Milford Sound flight and cruise.
In short
Four hours, twelve hours, or nine for both.
A Milford Sound flight and cruise is four to five hours. The coach day is twelve to thirteen. That is the whole comparison, and everything else is detail.
If you have the time and not the money, drive: the road is a good day. If you have the money and not the time, book a Milford Sound flight and cruise from $431 and get your afternoon back.
If you want both halves — the roadside stops and the Southern Alps — the road-one-way listing at $512 is the only Milford Sound flight and cruise that does it, at nine hours.
